Self-Love for Valentine's Day

Posted on Feb 14 | By Sandeep Jeronone

As Valentine’s day nears we’re often reminded of that special someone in our life, but for many of us, all the love in the air can be a time where we become alarmingly self-aware of our loneliness. So this Valentine’s day we’re all about putting your energy into your most important relationship - the one with yourself.

The concept of Self-love is such an underrated thing. It seems easy for us to love our family, our significant others, our pets. We spread gratitude and affection to so many others throughout the course of our lives, but we often forget to share that attention and warmth with ourselves. In fact anytime I would try to do things for myself exclusively, we often feel guilty. Guilt from feeling unproductive that I could use the time caring for myself for a more meaningful purpose, guilt from feeling selfish and guilt from feeling narcissistic about thinking of myself altogether. But that guilt is toxic to your ability to love yourself better and strengthen your overall confidence.

Of course, self-love is not always an easy thing to understand or achieve. It's not like a new lipstick, or even a new relationship, will miraculously make you love and appreciate yourself. In my experience, genuine self-love grows over time when I actively take care of myself, and do things that support my growth, both physically and emotionally.

Since the age of 16 I’ve struggled with my mental health. My journey has taught me the power of self-love, self-acceptance and being open to help from professionals and those who love me for me. Through the love of my friends, family and most importantly self, I’ve been able to get through every day. My health does not define me and I’ve been able to find my inner strength, happiness and success. With every sunset there is a sunrise.

Between the winter blues and Valentine’s Day, February can be pretty emotionally and mentally taxing, which is why I created my Sunset Beauty box. This box is super close to my heart because it was created in collaboration with Love is Louder, a social movement that amplifies the message that love and support are louder than any internal or external voice that may bring us down, cause pain and make us feel hopeless. This is the first time I’ve openly shared my story, so although scary at first - I feel extremely lucky to have the platform and ability to do so. $5 of the proceeds of my Sunset Beauty Box are donated to Love is Louder and The Jed Foundation.

May your journey with self love bring you a more self-assured, confident and happy you. Wishing you a very happy Valentine’s day. 💖

xx Taylor
