The Perfect Red Lip Guide

Posted on Dec 20 | By Sandeep Jeronone

As Christmas and New Year’s Eve quickly approach, it’s about time to start thinking about your holiday makeup looks. And there’s no better time of year to wear a red lip color. Though a red lipstick can complete your outfit and help you feel more confident, the tricky part is finding the perfect red lipstick. Luckily, we’ve put together a red lipstick guide to help you pick out the lippie to fit your skin tone, as well as some recommendations of some of our faves.

First up: What is your skin’s undertone?

The trick to picking out the right red lipstick for you is to first determine your skin’s undertone. If you’re a frequent foundation shopper, you’ve probably already figured it out, but for those of you who aren’t, here’s a couple hints to help you.

What Jewelry Looks Best On You: If you typically gravitate toward silver jewelry, chances are, you have a cool undertone. On the other hand, if you normally look better in gold jewelry, you probably have a warmer undertone.

Do You Tan Easily: Typically, if you’re someone who burns when you’re out in the sun for too long, you probably have a cooler undertone. If you tan pretty easily, you have a warmer undertone. And if you tend to burn first, then peel to a tan, you probably have a more neutral undertone to your skin.

What Color Are Your Veins: This test is a little trickier, especially if your veins aren’t too close to the surface of your skin. Bluer veins usually determine a cooler undertone, while greener veins indicate a warm undertone; if you’re somewhere in between, you probably have a neutral undertone.

Obviously, there are exceptions to these rules, but they do serve as helpful guides when you’re searching for the perfect red lip color.

Next up: What red lip undertone should you go for?

Orange-Reds: For the most part, people with warmer undertones in their skin should go for red lipsticks that have more orange or yellow undertones. Try out our Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencil in Stiletto or Retro.

Blue-Reds: Cooler-toned people should try out red lipsticks that have a more of a blue undertone. Try out our Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencil in Raven, Icon, or Vintage, or the Gel Color Lip + Cheek Balm in Siren or Wicked.

Vampy Reds: Luckily for everyone who loves a good red lip, neutral-toned reds work on all skin tones. We have a couple vampy colors to choose from. Take your pick between our Magnetic Matte Lip Colors in Vino or Burgundy, which are both wine-colored lip colors that are paired perfectly with a winged liner and bold brow.

Now you’re ready to take on the holidays with a gorgeous red lip color to make you the talk of the party!
